MISSION MOMENT

A Sewall Teacher’s Story

Sewall at the Dahlia Campus for Health and Well-Being E’monna, Early Childhood Teacher, Interviewed by Liz, VP of Programs

I first worked at Sewall back in 2015 when a staff came to my home to talk about Sewall’s early childhood education program at Dahlia. It seemed that there was also a job opening for me. I remember thinking how perfect it seemed because at this time I was not able to keep a job due to not having support to help me with my kids while at work, and I did not have a vehicle at the time to travel across town to get my kids to a childcare then make my way to work.

At this point I did not know if being a teacher was for me, but I was willing to try. After a few days went by, I was able to enroll my children at Sewall and begin work as a new teacher at Dahlia.  After a few months I was informed that my oldest daughter might be experiencing a form of trauma. At first, I used to think she was just showing off and wanted extra attention. When we would get home, I would yell at her and ask her why she was doing certain things; I would get mad that she was unable to just tell me. I started spending more quality time with her and in a year’s time I saw a difference in my baby. Sewall really helped me open my eyes and understand that all kids aren’t bad, they’re really crying out for help and that Sewall will help.

After Sewall, I worked at other early childhood centers, but it wasn’t my calling – like it was at Sewall.  I felt like Sewall kids needed me. At this point, I knew how to help kids self-regulate and hear their cries, and I was ready to help them succeed in life; their way. There is no other place like Sewall. They helped me become the teacher I am today and motivated me to pursue my Child Development Associate degree. I will continue and get my Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education. Thank you, Sewall!

Wellness During the Holidays

In order for Sewall early childhood professionals to bring their best to the children in the classroom, it is important for them to have knowledge and strategies about their own self-care. The holidays can bring up a range of emotions such as excitement and happiness as well as anxiety and fear. Whatever the experience, Sewall is offering time for early childhood professionals to talk about how to practice self-care and community during this season. Sewall Conversations is a new project creating space for connecting.

As you enjoy and reflect over the holidays, please remember to connect with others and practice self-care too.
