Challenge Match Update
Sewall Child Development Center is fortunate to have longstanding supporters like the Sewall Board of Directors and Committee members who understand that providing inclusive early childhood education requires significant resources.
This year, members of Sewall’s Board and Committee members would like to engage the community with a matching gift challenge to support our inclusion mission, and to support our constituents during this difficult time.
If 100 members of our community make a gift on or before 4/30/21, the board and committee members have generously offered to contribute $30,000 towards Sewall’s inclusive early childhood programs. A gift of any size will count towards the challenge match and unlock $30,000 to support our transdisciplinary staff and the children and families that Sewall serves.
Of the 100 donors needed to meet the challenge, 43 have given. If YOU and 56 others from our community make a gift today, YOU will help Sewall achieve the match and unlock $30,000!
Please click the “Give Now” button below or text “Sewall” to 50155 to make your gift today! Did you know that research indicates every $1 invested in early childhood education returns $13 in savings to society down the road? (Education Commission of the States, 2017)

During the beginning of the COVID lockdown, teachers and staff worked hard to continue to provide programming to children virtually. Today, Sewall has 19 classrooms opened across seven sites in Denver County. Sewall has continued to provide remote services via our remote team. Elizabeth, Early Childhood Education Teacher, is one example of Sewall teachers and staff using Zoom to get creative and plant the seeds of “collaboration” early.
During remote learning, the Dolphin and Panda classrooms (ages 3-5) used the whiteboard feature on Zoom to create “collaborative drawings” together. Students, parents, and teachers would draw and create simultaneously! The above image (Elmer the Elephant) is a sample of one of the collaborative drawings.
“It was a very fun way to feel connected during our time apart. Sometimes we would draw something related to our book or theme for the day, other times it was open ended, and everyone just drew whatever they wanted!” Elizabeth Kennedy, Sewall Early Childhood Special Educator
Judith Heumann Chats with Sewall Before Champions for Children
Last week, Judy Heumann met with Ian Watlington and the Sewall team for a pre-event Champions for Children discussion. It was fun to interact with Judy. She will bring a wealth of insight and a valuable perspective to the reality people with disabilities and their families face every day. You won’t want to miss this event or the opportunity to interact with Judy on 4/30. Click here to register for Champions for Children.

Supporting One, Supporting All
Teacher • Researcher • Speaker • Storyteller
Shelley has worked with school districts and community organizations around the world in supporting and promoting equity for all learners. She has an undergraduate degree in Special Education at the University of Alberta, a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University, and is a PhD candidate at the University of British Columbia.
In this session, we will target a practical aspect of inclusion: how do we support a group with so many diverse needs and abilities? We will unpack some research-based strategies and examples of how design impacts success for everyone.
