As we all continue to adjust to the ongoing impacts of the COVID pandemic, Sewall’s We Are All Better Together Campaign will be highlighting some of our communities’ essential workers, the early childhood teachers, therapists, and caregivers at Sewall!
From now until April 30th, we will share stories that highlight the impact your support makes. In addition, we will feature a nationally acclaimed group of inclusion advocacy speakers that will be presenting as part of Sewall’s Partners in Leadership program and you are welcome to join us!
Sewall Board’s Magical Read Along Program
Staying connected with you, and everyone in our community, is a priority. Undoubtedly that has been hard given the current restrictions on large gatherings and social distancing mandates. In an effort to connect, members of Sewall’s Board of Directors’ and Program Committee are creating a virtual library of read aloud video stories to share.
Beginning Monday (3/15) and each Monday following, we will feature a favorite book read by a member of the Board or Program Committee. Check out the first book, Llama Llama, written by Anna Dewdney and read for you by David Solano. David is a Board Member and Sewall Alumnus. Click the image above or here to watch.
Virtual Inclusion Advocacy Speaker Series — Spring 2021
Sewall is excited to offer another incredible lineup of nationally renowned inclusion advocacy speakers presenting between March 10 and April 30. The first session was last week with Jonathan Mooney, author of Normal Sucks: How to Live, Learn and Thrive Outside the Lines. His talk was very thought provoking, and he shared why three foundational principles must change for inclusion to be realized in our communities and systems. Two more speakers will be featured as we culminate with Judith Heumann at our Champions for Children event on Friday, 4/30. Checkout the next two speakers below. Shea Tanis, PhD — Wednesday, March 24, at 6 pm
Director for Policy and Advocacy at Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities at the University of Colorado
“Experts say the ‘new normal’ in 2025 will be far more tech-driven.” However, people with disabilities are disproportionately denied access to new and emerging technology solutions through policy, programs, and cultures. Shea will share an overview of policies and programs related to technologies, as well as an introduction to the latest disruptive technologies in 2021.

Shelley Moore — Wednesday, April 21, at 6 pm
Teacher • Researcher • Speaker • Storyteller
Shelley has worked with school districts and community organizations around the world in supporting and promoting equity for all learners. Her first book, One Without the Other, was released in 7/16 to follow-up her TEDx Talk. She has an undergraduate degree in Special Education at the University of Alberta, a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University, and is a PhD candidate at the University of British Columbia.

In this session, we will target a practical aspect of inclusion: how do we support a group with so many diverse needs and abilities? We will unpack some research-based strategies and examples of how design impacts success for everyone.

Judith Heumann — Friday, 4/30

Author • International Leader in the Disability Community • One of Time’s Magazine’s “100 Women of the Year”
Judith (Judy) Heumann is a lifelong advocate for the rights of people with disabilities and is an internationally recognized leader in the disability rights community. She has served as an Advisor for the U.S. State Department, The World Bank’s first Advisor on Disability and Development, and was a Ford Foundation Senior Fellow where she helped advance inclusion in the Foundation’s work.
Judy is featured in Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution and 2020 American award-winning documentary film that is available on Netflix. She is the co-author of Being Heumann “Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist.”
Ian Watlington, a previous Sewall speaker on many occasions, is a Denver native and nationally acclaimed advocate now living in Washington, DC. He is an advocate, policy wonk, fighter, thinker and changer, and we are fortunate to have him as moderator. Together they will discuss Judy’s journey with exclusion and inclusion and address several issues pertinent to education and parenting.
