When YOU partner and support Sewall, YOU Change Lives. When YOU support Sewall’s mission of inclusive early childhood education, YOU are providing the following benefits for a child and family that will be their foundation for life long success. Some of the benefits of an inclusive setting are:
- Children develop friendships and learn how to play and interact with one another.
- Children develop a more positive image of themselves and a healthy attitude about the uniqueness of others.
- Children learn language best from other children who speak differently than them.
- All children make academic gains in high-quality, inclusive settings where individualized needs are met.
- Children are encouraged to be resourceful, creative, and cooperative.
- Children are more sensitive to the interest and needs of others.
- Positive attitudes are developed that impact future relationships.
Here is a story of “Why Inclusion Matters” to society and to children like Elliott. Elliott’s family story embodies the benefits of inclusion. Sewall would not be able to achieve our inclusion mission without the support of our friends and partners like YOU!
Elliot, my son, was born with a disability that was never diagnosed. When you have a young child with a disability, there are years of denial and questions about who your child will be, what he will be capable of, and what his life will look like. Elliot attended Sewall’s early childhood education program where he participated in a nurturing and supportive environment that allowed Elliott and our family to move forward through all of the questions and concerns. It was Sewall’s gentle nudging that encouraged and nurtured Elliot and our family to keep pushing forward. Not only did Sewall push Elliot to walk and foster skills a young child needs, but they provided an inclusive environment where Elliot wasn’t different than any of the other children in his class. Elliot was just their friend. It wasn’t just the therapies that Elliot received in the classroom, but it was the connection and relationships with his teachers and peers that made Sewall so amazing. Elliott is 18 now and in a transition program. Sewall set the stage for his future educational opportunities.
